Last Year

On May 15, the New York State Assembly passed a unanimous resolution to declare May 23 "No Profanity Day" for the state of New York. Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. submitted the resolution on behalf of Minister Kurtis Blow Walker, who will be presented a copy of the document on the steps of the Bronx Supreme Court House at Bronx Borough Hall during a joint press conference between city officials and hip hop pioneers, among them Walker and Diaz. There will be a concert Friday Night May 23 featuring – Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force – Kurtis Blow & AJ – Grandmaster Mele Mel – Force MDs – Rob Base – Dana Dane – Spoonie G – Positive K – Grand Wizzard Theodore – DJ Hollywood – Lovebug Starski – The Air Force Crew – Kurtis Blow Jr. - The New Artist of the Year Rew York.

Walker's crusade, propelled by government officials such as Diaz and hip hop moguls Grandmaster Mele Mel, Afrika Bambaataa and the Grand Wizzard Theodore, began with a fight against the N-word, a national discussion that has included Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). However, Walker says that No Profanity Day has ramifications that extend well beyond the use of language and seep into people's actions.

"This isn't a law; it's a resolution. So we're on the honor system," Walker said. "But the power behind the resolution is the statement. We are saying, and the state is saying, 'People, we have a challenge for you. For 24 hours, no crimes, no murders, no hate, no violence, no drugs, no sin. Can you do it?" Walker says that this proclamation isn't targeted just at the hip hop community, and that everyone should use this day as an opportunity to examine their own use of language.

"Life and death are in the power of the tongue and those who love it shall eat its fruit," Walker said. "This is not hip hop reaching out to hip hop, but because rappers are icons in the community, we are coming together, with the state of New York behind us, we are standing up to move away from profane communication.

"When you concentrate a whole day on peace, kindness, love, faithfulness, self control, that's the fruit of the spirit," Walker said. "It's how you get away from violence—by concentrating on what's good."
